School Entry & Visitor Reminders
As a reminder to families, all visitors entering Capitol Hill School during the school day must use the main entrance and check in at the office. Please do not enter through side doors or student entry/exit doors, even if it feels quicker or more familiar. While you may know you belong here, not all staff may recognize every adult in the building, and following this process helps us maintain a safe and secure environment for everyone.
We also want to remind families that teachers are not available for unscheduled, in-person conversations during the school day. If you have a question or would like to connect, please email your child’s teacher to arrange a time. Staff email addresses can be found on our school website. Thank you for helping us keep Capitol Hill School a safe, respectful, and well-organized place for students and staff.
No School for Students – Teachers’ Convention & Family Day
A friendly reminder to families that there will be no school for students on Thursday, February 12, and Friday, February 13, as staff attend the annual Calgary City Teachers' Convention. This professional development event, held at various venues around the city, provides valuable learning opportunities for educators.
Additionally, Monday, February 16, is Family Day, a statutory holiday. We hope you enjoy the long weekend with your loved ones! Classes will resume on Tuesday, February 17.
Valentine’s Day at CHS: Guidelines for Families
While students will not be in school on Valentine’s Day this year, we have received questions from families and teachers about how to approach Valentine’s celebrations in the days leading up to February 14. At CHS, we want to ensure that any activities related to Valentine’s Day reflect our values of kindness, inclusivity, and respect for all students. Many classrooms may take a Friendship Day approach, focusing on appreciation and positive connections rather than traditional Valentine’s gift-giving.
While there is no requirement or expectation, if your child would like to give out Valentine’s Day cards, please follow these guidelines:
- Bring Enough for Everyone - If students are bringing Valentine’s cards, they must bring one for every classmate to ensure that everyone is included and feels valued.
- Simplify Card Distribution - To make handing out cards easier, we ask families to only sign the “From” section and leave the “To” section blank. This eliminates the need for class lists and allows students to distribute their cards quickly and independently.
- No Candy or Treats - In alignment with Alberta Government and Calgary Board of Education nutrition guidelines, please do not send candy, chocolates, or any edible treats with Valentine’s cards. Instead, families are encouraged to choose non-food alternatives, such as stickers, pencils, bookmarks, or small activity sheets.
Updated IPPs Coming Home Mid-February
Individualized Program Plans (IPPs) for students requiring additional support are being updated for February 2026. These updated IPPs will be distributed to families the week of February 17-20. Parents and guardians are asked to review the learning targets and goals outlined in the IPP and sign the second review section on the final page to indicate their agreement. For convenience, families can also consent to receive future IPPs electronically via email. If there are any questions or further clarification needed regarding the IPP, please reach out to your child’s teacher as the first point of contact.
Learn and Share: School Planning | February 18
Each year, our school takes part in School Planning, an important process that helps guide how we support student learning and well-being. We make the best decisions when we learn together and hear from our school community. At the School Council meeting on February 18, we’ll be sharing information about our school development plan, budget, and school fees, and how they work together to set priorities and improve student learning outcomes. Families will also have an opportunity to ask questions and share feedback. We value your perspectives and hope you can join us for this important conversation.
Report Cards Available On-Line February 24
Starting February 24, families can access the online report cards for first term of the 2025-26 school year through MyCBE. Parents and guardians can view, download, and print their child’s report card through their MyCBE account, as paper copies of report cards are no longer sent home by schools. Technical support is available for those needing assistance with the portal.
Student-Led Learning Conferences – Feb. 26 & 27
Student-Led Learning Conferences are an important opportunity for students to share their learning with their families. During these conferences, students take the lead by showing examples of their work, reflecting on their progress, and talking about what they are proud of and what they are working toward next. Teachers are present to support the process and answer questions, but the focus is on students explaining their own learning.
This year, Student-Led Learning Conferences will take place on February 26 (4:00 PM – 8:00 PM) and February 27 (8:30 AM – 12:30 PM). Conferences are scheduled using a shared, one-hour time slot format, with up to four families booked per hour (for example, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM). Families are welcome to arrive at any point during their booked hour and are not required to remain in the classroom for the full time.
Because multiple families will be present in the space, student-led conferences are not intended for in-depth, private meetings with teachers. Families who have students on IPPs will have opportunities to connect separately with their child’s teacher for IPP reviews, as needed.
Conference booking will open on February 20 at 10:00 AM and can be accessed through your MyCBE account. Additional information, including step-by-step booking instructions, is available on the MyCBE – School Conferences webpage.
