Dungeons & Dragons Club: Adventures Await at CHS!

Exciting quests, daring battles, and creative storytelling are all part of the Dungeons & Dragons Club, now running at Capitol Hill School! This popular tabletop role-playing game is bringing together Division 2 students for epic lunchtime adventures, with sessions running Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays through February and into March. Guided by a team of dedicated Grade 6 student leaders, participants take on the roles of brave heroes, working together to solve mysteries, battle mythical creatures, and explore imaginary worlds - all while building teamwork, problem-solving, and storytelling skills.

Each student is assigned to a designated playgroup, meeting on one of the three club days. Sessions are structured around engaging campaigns, allowing players to develop their characters and progress through their adventures week by week. No experience is needed, and all game materials are provided, making it an easy and accessible way for students to join in the fun. With the first campaign running through early March and potential for additional sessions, we’re excited to see how these stories unfold! A big thank you to our Grade 6 Dungeon Masters for bringing this club to life—we can’t wait to hear about the legendary quests ahead!

Valentine’s Day at CHS: Guidelines for Families

While students will not be in school on Valentine’s Day this year, we have received questions from families and teachers about how to approach Valentine’s celebrations in the days leading up to February 14. At CHS, we want to ensure that any activities related to Valentine’s Day reflect our values of kindness, inclusivity, and respect for all students. Many classrooms may take a Friendship Day approach, focusing on appreciation and positive connections rather than traditional Valentine’s gift-giving.

While there is no requirement or expectation, if your child would like to give out Valentine’s Day cards, please follow these guidelines:

  • Bring Enough for Everyone - If students are bringing Valentine’s cards, they must bring one for every classmate to ensure that everyone is included and feels valued.
  • Simplify Card Distribution - To make handing out cards easier, we ask families to only sign the “From” section and leave the “To” section blank. This eliminates the need for class lists and allows students to distribute their cards quickly and independently.
  • No Candy or Treats - In alignment with Alberta Government and Calgary Board of Education nutrition guidelines, please do not send candy, chocolates, or any edible treats with Valentine’s cards. Instead, families are encouraged to choose non-food alternatives, such as stickers, pencils, bookmarks, or small activity sheets.
  • Respect Classroom Guidelines - Not all classrooms will be engaging in Valentine’s activities. If you have any questions about your child’s class, please check with their teacher to confirm what is planned.
  • Promote Kindness & Inclusivity - Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to celebrate friendship and kindness. We encourage families to talk with their children about showing appreciation for others in meaningful ways—through words, actions, and small gestures that foster a positive and caring school community.

We appreciate your support in helping us create an inclusive and respectful environment at Capitol Hill School. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teacher.

No School for Students – Teachers’ Convention & Family Day (Feb. 13, 14 & 17)

A friendly reminder to families that there will be no school for students on Thursday, February 13, and Friday, February 14, 2025, as Capitol Hill School staff attend the annual Calgary City Teachers' Convention. This professional development event, held at the Calgary Telus Convention Centre and Hyatt Regency Calgary, provides valuable learning opportunities for educators across the city.

Additionally, Monday, February 17, is Family Day, a statutory holiday. We hope you enjoy the long weekend with your loved ones! Classes will resume on Tuesday, February 18.

Reminder: Return Signed IPP Signature Pages to School

A reminder to families that Individualized Program Plans (IPPs) were sent home during the last week of January for students requiring additional support. We kindly ask that parents and guardians sign and date the "2nd Review" column on the final page of the document and return that page to the school as soon as possible. Families may keep the full IPP document for their records. If you have any questions or need further clarification regarding the IPP, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

Can You Help Volunteer for Fun Lunch?

Our next Fun Lunch is on February 20, and we need your help to make it a success! Volunteers are essential for sorting and distributing pre-ordered lunches, ensuring every student receives their meal on time. If you can spare a short amount of time, we’d love your support—arrive at 10:45 AM to verify orders and help distribute lunches to classrooms by 11:20 AM. This is a great way to meet other parents, get involved in the school community, and make a meaningful contribution. Even if you can only help once, your time and effort are greatly appreciated!
