Thank You to Our Ski Trip Volunteers

Thank you to the parent volunteers who supported our Grade 5 and 6 ski and snowboard trip to Winsport COP earlier this week. Your help with the day’s logistics and supervision made a real difference, and we are grateful for the time and care you gave to help the experience run smoothly. With beautiful weather and excellent conditions, students had a wonderful time and came away with lots of smiles and great memories.

We would also like to thank School Council for funding the bus transportation for this trip. Their support helped reduce the per-student cost significantly and made this opportunity more accessible for families. We appreciate the many ways our parent community helps make experiences like this possible for our students.

Planning Ahead for Next School Year

As we look ahead to the 2026–27 school year, we are asking families to let us know if their child / children will not be returning to Capitol Hill School in the fall, or if plans for next year are still uncertain. With about four months of school remaining, this information is very helpful as we begin planning classes, staffing, and supports for students.

If this applies to your family, please complete the Student Planning Form linked below. Families whose children will be returning to CHS do not need to respond, and families of current Grade 6 students moving on to junior high do not need to complete the form. Thank you for helping us plan ahead.

Spring Fling Dance – March 18

Families are invited to join us for this year’s Spring Fling Dance on Thursday, March 19 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM in the Capitol Hill School gym. This free event, hosted by School Council and CHEES, is open to all CHS families and is a nice opportunity to come together as a school community.

A concession stand will be available, so please bring Loonies and Toonies if you would like to purchase items. Pizza slices will also be sold for $2 each. Please remember to bring a water bottle, as beverages will not be available for sale. All students must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the event – there is no supervision provided by the school or School Council.

Kindergarten Orientation for 2026-27 – March 11

Families with registered Kindergarten students are invited to attend our Kindergarten Orientation at Capitol Hill School next week, on Wednesday, March 11. The session will begin at 5:00 PM and will run for about one hour. This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to meet our Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Dreyer, and learn more about the program.

The evening will include a short presentation, a chance to see the learning spaces and resources, and time for questions. A member of the school administration team and a School Council representative will also be available to share information. Please note that this is a parents/guardians-only session. Children will have an opportunity to visit the school on May 7 as part of a separate orientation experience designed especially for them.

If you still haven’t registered your Kindergarten-age child for school next year, please see the CBE New Student Registration information.

Supporting Conflict Resolution with WITS

At Capitol Hill School, we use the WITS strategy as a school-wide approach to help students manage conflict in calm and respectful ways. WITS stands for Walk away, Ignore, Talk it out, and Seek help. These simple steps give students practical tools to use when challenges come up with peers, whether in the classroom, on the playground, or during everyday interactions. We also adjust how we teach the strategy so it is age-appropriate for students across Kindergarten to Grade 6.

We are sharing this approach with families so students hear the same language at school and at home. When children can practice these steps in different settings, it helps build confidence, problem-solving skills, and positive ways of working through conflict. You may wish to ask your child about WITS and use the same strategy at home when small conflicts arise.

Away for the Day: Personal Mobile Devices

At Capitol Hill School, we follow the CBE’s “Away for the Day” approach for personal mobile devices. We recommend that students leave devices such as cellphones, smartwatches, tablets, gaming devices, and earbuds at home unless their use has been approved for learning purposes or an exception has been made for medical or specialized learning needs. If students do bring a device to school, it must be turned off or set to silent and stored out of sight before entering the building.

Personal mobile devices may not be used during the school day, including at recess, lunch, and other breaks. If a student needs to contact home during the day, they can do so through the main office. Families are also reminded that any device brought to school is the responsibility of the student and family.
