Spring Break – March 23–27
Spring Break is coming up at the end of March. Please note that the last day of classes for students will be Thursday, March 19, since Friday, March 20 is a non-instructional day. We wish all of our students and families a safe, restful, and enjoyable break, and we look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday, March 30.
CHS Team Spirit Day – March 19
On Thursday, March 19, Capitol Hill School will be celebrating CHS Team Spirit Day. Students and staff are invited to wear something that represents a group, team, or community that is meaningful to them. This might include jerseys, team or club sweaters, uniforms such as Scouts, Cubs, or Girl Guides, CHS school swag or spirit wear, or clothing that helps them represent any group, team, or club they want to share with pride.
This spirit day is an opportunity to celebrate identity, belonging, and the many connections that make up our school community. We hope it will spark conversation and help students see the different ways we are connected both inside and outside of school. We look forward to seeing the many ways our students and staff choose to show their team spirit that day.
Spring Fling Dance and Volunteer Call
Families are invited to join us for this year’s Spring Fling Dance on Thursday, March 19 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM in the Capitol Hill School gym. This free event, hosted by School Council and CHEES, is open to all CHS families. A concession stand will be available, with candy for purchase and pizza slices for $2 each, so please bring Loonies and Toonies. All students must be accompanied by an adult throughout the event. Please note that supervision is the responsibility of attending adults, not the school or School Council.
To help the evening run smoothly, School Council is also looking for volunteers to sign up for short shifts at the front door, treat table, pizza table, and clean-up. These shorter time slots are intended to allow families to enjoy the dance while also helping out. If you are available to lend a hand, please consider signing up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C084FACAD29A0F8C34-62952364-capitol/184322780#/

Keeping Valuables at Home
A quick reminder for families to help prevent lost or missing items at school. Please encourage your child to leave valuables and collectibles at home, including trading cards, expensive toys, and other personal items that would be difficult to replace. Even when students are careful, busy school days can make it hard to keep track of special belongings.
As a reminder, the Calgary Board of Education cannot be held responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal property brought to school. A helpful rule of thumb is: if something is too important to lose, it is best to keep it at home. Thank you for your support in helping us keep the focus on learning and a calm, respectful school environment.
Recognizing Eid al-Fitr
Friday, March 20, is the expected date of Eid al-Fitr, although the exact day may vary slightly based on local moon sighting. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month during which many Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and focus on prayer, reflection, and generosity. It is an important time of celebration, gratitude, and community for many Muslim families.
You may also hear the greeting “Eid Mubarak,” which means “Blessed Eid” or “Have a blessed Eid.” As this occasion approaches, we wish peace and joy to all members of our Muslim community who may be celebrating. Eid Mubarak to those observing.
Spring Equinox
On Friday, March 20, we welcome the spring equinox, the point in the year when day and night are nearly equal and the season begins to shift toward longer days and new growth. In many contexts, the equinox is understood as an astronomical marker of spring. Here on Treaty 7 territory, it can also invite us to reflect on local land-based teachings about renewal, balance, and our relationship with the natural world. In Blackfoot teachings, spring is often described as a time of awakening, movement, and renewed connection with the land.
As a school committed to Truth and Reconciliation, we see this season as an opportunity to keep learning. Approaches such as Two-Eyed Seeing and ethical space remind us to listen carefully, respect different ways of knowing, and reflect on how we connect with one another and the world around us. Spring invites all of us to pause, notice change, and consider what renewal can mean in our school community.
Pi Day – March 14
Pi Day takes place on Saturday, March 14, so while students will not be at school that day, we wanted to share it as a fun opportunity for families who may wish to explore it at home. Pi (π) is a special number in math that helps us measure circles. It represents the distance around a circle compared to the distance across it, and it always begins with 3.14, which is why Pi Day is celebrated on 3/14. Families might enjoy marking the day by noticing circles around the home, trying measuring or estimating activities, reading a math-themed book, or even baking and sharing a pie together. It’s a simple and fun way to spark curiosity and show that math is part of everyday life.
