Gratitude for a Busy and Positive Week

Thank you to all the families who joined us for learning conferences on Thursday evening and Friday morning. It was great to connect and see so many of you in the building, supporting your children’s learning. A big shoutout to Ms. B for organizing the Scholastic Book Fair and to all of the amazing volunteers who helped throughout the week and during conferences. Thank you as well to Ms. Whitehead for her support at the Book Fair, especially on Friday morning. And a big thank you to our School Council for providing dinner for teachers on Thursday night. It was much appreciated and helped keep everyone going through a busy evening.

Thank You, Frisbee Rob!

We had a fantastic week with Frisbee Rob at Capitol Hill School! Over four days, every class had the chance to take part in engaging and high-energy frisbee sessions that focused on skill-building, movement, teamwork, and having fun. It was great to see all students actively participating, trying something new, and enjoying themselves in a supportive environment. Rob’s positive energy and inclusive approach helped make the experience meaningful for everyone. Once again, thank you to School Council for funding this residency and helping bring unique and active learning opportunities to our students.

Alien In-Line Skating Returns – December 1–5 & 18

Alien In-Line will be back at Capitol Hill School from December 1–5 and on December 18 to complete the skating residency that was paused in October. Please refer to Alien In-Line Schedule - Dec2025 for your child’s class dates. Students should bring a pair of socks and, if preferred, their own CSA-approved helmet. If you're available to volunteer with helping students gear up - especially in the younger grades - please contact your child’s teacher. Thanks to School Council for funding this fun activity!

The Giving Tree is Coming Soon

Our Giving Tree is now up in the main hallway and already bringing a festive and caring spirit into the school! This Capitol Hill tradition is about giving back and supporting families in our school community who could use a little extra help this holiday season. The tree was set up Thursday afternoon and will be ready to go early next week. We’ll be sharing more information soon, including a Sign-Up Genius link for those who would like to participate.

Families who wish to take part can choose to purchase a gift for a child or adult from one of our supported families. As gifts are returned to the school, students will hang ornaments on the tree - each one a symbol of kindness and connection within our community. Watch your email early next week for full details on how to get involved. Thank you for helping make the season a little brighter for others.

Veterans' Food Bank Drive + LEGO Challenge!

Our Veterans Food Bank Drive is in full swing at Capitol Hill School - and it’s being proudly led by our Grade 5 students! Together, we’re working to collect non-perishable food items for the Veterans Food Bank of Alberta, and we’re inviting our entire school community to take part.

To keep things fun and rewarding, we’re adding a little friendly competition into the mix:

LEGO Building Challenge – Friday, December 18

To celebrate everyone’s efforts, all classes will take part in a LEGO building challenge on the last day before Winter Break. Here's how it works:

  • For every 15 items your class collects, you'll receive one bag of random LEGO pieces.
  • The more your class brings in, the more pieces you get to build with!
  • The building challenge will take place on Friday, December 18 during class time.

Each week leading up to the break has a special donation focus:

  • Week 1: Canned food
  • Week 2: Boxed food
  • Week 3: Bagged food

Please send donations to your child’s classroom first, so they can be counted before being added to the school-wide bins.

CHS Winter Concert – December 10 at 6:00 PM

We’re excited to invite families to our upcoming Winter Concert on Tuesday, December 10 at 6:00 PM. This concert will feature performances by our talented Kindergarten to Grade 3 students. Ms. Whitehead has been working hard with students to prepare, and the music is sounding fantastic! We’re looking forward to sharing their efforts with you in a warm, festive evening of song and celebration. Please note that this concert is for Division I students only. Our Division II students (Grades 4–6) will have their turn to perform in the Spring Concert, later in the school year. More information about tickets and logistics will be coming home soon, so stay tuned!

Cold Weather Reminder

With snow on the ground and temperatures dropping, we’d like to remind families to make sure students are coming to school dressed for the winter weather. This includes wearing a warm jacket, a hat or toque, gloves or mittens, winter boots, and - especially for younger students - snow pants. Proper winter gear helps ensure students can stay warm and enjoy their time outside during recess and lunch breaks.

As a reminder, according to CBE’s Winter Weather policy, when the temperature (including wind chill) reaches -20°C or colder, students are typically kept indoors for recess and lunch breaks. This guideline may be adjusted depending on the activity or local conditions.

Soft Entry Reminder – Doors Open at 8:35 AM

A reminder to all families that Capitol Hill School begins soft entry at 8:35 AM, with classroom instruction beginning promptly at 8:43 AM. During soft entry, students enter the school and head directly to their classrooms. Because teachers are supervising students inside the building, there is no outdoor supervision provided before 8:35 AM. Please do not drop off or leave your child unattended on school grounds before the doors open. If students arrive early and try to enter through the front doors, they will not be admitted until 8:35 AM.

School Swag Sent Home Thursday

Capitol Hill School apparel orders were sent home with students on Thursday. If you haven’t seen your order yet, please check your child’s backpack. Thank you to all families who supported the Donate-A-Shirt initiative - your kindness helps ensure every student has a chance to wear their CHS gear with pride. We look forward to seeing our school community rocking their new apparel!
