Fall Break

We would like to remind you that Fall Break runs from today, Friday, November 8, through Wednesday, November 13. Classes will resume on Thursday, November 14. We hope everyone has a restful break and comes back rejuvenated for the remainder of 2024!

Remembrance Day Assembly

Yesterday, Capitol Hill School gathered for a meaningful Remembrance Day Ceremony led by our Grade 6 students. They spoke about the significance of Remembrance Day, paying special tribute to the contributions of Indigenous veterans, especially fitting as November 8 marked Indigenous Veterans Day. The ceremony opened with a beautiful performance of “Dona Nobis Pacem” (“Give us peace”) by our student choir, led by Ms. Whitehead, setting a reflective and heartfelt tone.

Each grade contributed hand-crafted wreaths, which were brought forward and laid as part of the ceremony before we observed a solemn minute of silence at 11:00 AM. A huge thank you goes out to all the students who participated, the teachers who organized and planned the event, and the families and community members who joined us. As we continue to honour this day, we encourage families to participate in the many Remembrance Day ceremonies happening throughout Calgary on November 11. More information can be found on the City of Calgary website.

Movember

This November, Capitol Hill School staff have been invited to take part in “Movember” to raise awareness for men's health. If you spot some new moustaches on your favourite staff, don’t be surprised! Whether they’re patchy, impressive, or downright funny, these moustaches are all about sparking conversations and showing support for important health issues that affect fathers, brothers, sons, and friends.

We’re excited to join this global movement and do our part to get people talking. So, next time you see a teacher with a moustache, give them a nod or a smile – they’re helping spread awareness one whisker at a time. If you want to contribute to the cause and help staff reach their goal, check out the CHS Movember webpage.

CBE Indigenous Education Professional Learning Day – Sharing Back

Today, Capitol Hill School teachers took part in a system-wide professional learning day focused on Indigenous Education. This session centred around the concept of creating “ethical space” in teaching - an approach that blends Indigenous and Western knowledge systems to foster mutual respect and collaboration. Staff explored how to incorporate Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing, and knowing into their lesson planning, and designed learning tasks to bridge these perspectives with outcomes from Alberta’s new science curriculum.

Through activities that highlighted language revitalization, land acknowledgements, and holistic educational practices, teachers engaged in discussions on designing learning experiences that respect and reflect Indigenous knowledge. This work underscores the school’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural understanding, helping students connect with broader perspectives and deepen their learning journey.

Grade 3 Students Upcoming Jasper Fundraiser

Our Grade 3 students at Capitol Hill School are stepping up to support Jasper after the wildfires this summer. As part of their Science and Global Citizenship work, they’ve been busy making beaded bracelets with their older buddies to sell to our school community. The big day is Wednesday, November 20th, and all proceeds will go to the Jasper Community Team Society (JCTS). We’re encouraging students to bring a $1.00 donation (or whatever they can) to buy a bracelet. To make sure everyone gets a chance, students can pick one bracelet each.

One of our Grade 3 classes has even been writing letters to students at Jasper Elementary, showing their support and building a connection. This project has been an inspiring way for our students to put kindness into action and make a real difference.

Calling All Parents: Support Our School’s Casino Fundraiser

Capitol Hill School’s annual Casino Fundraiser is just around the corner, and we urgently need more parents to volunteer! Mark your calendars for December 6 and 7 at Ace Casino Airport, and consider lending a hand. No special experience is required—casino staff provide all the training you need on the day of your shift, making it an easy way to get involved and support our school.

This event is vital for student programming, with all funds raised directly benefiting our kids at Capitol Hill. Volunteering is not only simple but also rewarding. Bring a friend or sign up with another parent, enjoy a free meal during your shift, and be part of an effort that makes a real impact in our community. Ready to help? Sign up here! We’re counting on you to make this event a success!

CBE Child & Youth Well-Being Family & Caregiver Series

Well-being is a precondition for student achievement. Students need to be well to succeed. Currently, students face a wide range of mental health challenges, including stress, anxiety, and depression. This trend is alarming and requires our attention. The Calgary Board of Education invites all parents and guardians to join us in a pre-recorded and live online series focusing on child and youth well-being. These sessions will be hosted in partnership with experts from Alberta Health Services and Recovery Alberta and will explore topics such as Peer Pressure, Healthy Relationships, Mental Health for Highly Sensitive Teens, and navigating Parent-Teen relationships.

Acting on feedback from participants who joined us during our live online sessions over the past two years, moving forward we invite all guardians and parents to listen to the pre-recorded or live sessions at their convenience. These sessions will be free and provide information, resources, helplines, and services to support healthy child and youth development. More information is available on the CBE website.
