Grade 3 Students Explore Culture and Quality of Life at Sam Centre
On Wednesday, October 2nd, our Grade 3 students had an exciting and educational field trip to the Sam Centre at Stampede Park. This visit was designed to tie in with the students’ Social Studies curriculum, focusing on how geographic, social, cultural, and linguistic factors affect the quality of life in communities.
During their visit, students participated in the Stampede Sensations program, which provided an immersive, multi-sensory experience of Calgary’s Stampede traditions. Students explored exhibits that connected them to the history and culture of southern Alberta, with activities like learning trick roping and experiencing a digital Stampede Parade. The day also included a guided gallery exploration, where students observed artifacts and stories that have shaped Calgary's community and quality of life over the past century.
This field trip offered Grade 3 students the chance to examine the social and cultural characteristics that influence communities, reinforcing their classroom learning through hands-on engagement. Following the field trip, students reflected on their observations in their learning journals, which will contribute to their ongoing understanding of community life.
A big thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers for joining us and supporting this meaningful off-site learning experience!
Kindergarten Field Trip to Leighton Art Centre
On Thursday, our Kindergarten students had the amazing opportunity to visit the Leighton Art Centre, and it was a truly enriching experience for everyone involved! This field trip was closely tied to the new Science curriculum, focusing on Earth Systems and deepening students' understanding of the living world.
During the trip, students engaged in a variety of activities that connected to their curriculum. They explored the natural environment through a nature walk to Echo Hill and Antler Station, where they were encouraged to use their senses to observe their surroundings, ask questions about the environment, and reflect on their experiences. This helped to reinforce concepts of respecting and interacting thoughtfully with nature.
Students also had the chance to tour Barbara and A.C. Leighton’s historic home, which includes both a museum and an art gallery. To add a creative touch to the day, the Kindergarteners completed an art project, bringing their observations and new knowledge to life through their work.
This field trip will continue to inspire learning throughout the school year, with classroom projects and discussions linking back to the experiences and discoveries made at the Leighton Art Centre. We are so grateful to the parents who volunteered their time to support this memorable learning adventure! Thank you for helping make this field trip such a success!
Alien Inline Skating Residency – Week 1 Recap & Important Reminders
This week kicked off the highly anticipated Alien Inline Skating residency, with our grade 5 and 6 students leading the way. They had an amazing time, learning new skills and practicing their moves, and they wrapped up the week with a fun-filled inline skating music party, cruising around the gym to some great tunes!
As we look forward to next week’s sessions, please refer to the schedule for specific dates and grade information. While students are encouraged to bring their own helmet, it’s not a requirement—helmets will be provided if needed. However, please ensure your child brings socks to wear with the inline skates, as the school cannot provide extra socks.
The program is led by skilled instructors from Alien In-Line, focusing on skating safety, skill development, and plenty of fun free-skating time. Remember, students must have their Acknowledgement of Risk and Consent Forms submitted in order to participate. If you haven't already returned the form, please do so as soon as possible to ensure your child can join in on the fun.
A huge thank you to our School Council and CHEES for generously funding this engaging and active experience for our students! We’re excited for another great week of skating ahead!

Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser – Friday, October 11
This coming Friday, October 11th, we’ll be holding our Mathnasium-sponsored Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser. Mathnasium has generously provided pumpkins, and you can pick one up after school in exchange for a donation. It’s a great way to get your pumpkin ready for carving just in time for the weekend while supporting our school – all proceeds go directly back to Capitol Hill School!
We are also looking for volunteers to assist with picking up the pumpkins on the morning of the fundraiser. Volunteers will collect them from Superstore, and Mr. K will coordinate with our organizer, Daisy. If you’re available to help, please reach out to Mr. K at bakwiatkowski@cbe.ab.ca.
Mathnasium will be set up near the grade 3/4 doors by the playground after school on Friday. Be sure to stop by, grab a pumpkin, and support this fantastic fundraiser! Thank you for your continued support – we hope to see you on the 11th!
Casino Fundraiser – Volunteers Needed!
Our School Council’s biggest fundraiser is just around the corner, and we need your help to make it a success! Every two years, we are fortunate to receive a time slot to volunteer at a casino, which raises the majority of the funds used to support a wide range of programs and activities at our school. This year, our Casino dates are December 6th and 7th, with all shifts taking place at Ace Casino Airport.
The funds raised from this event – typically between $50,000 and $75,000 – are crucial in supporting initiatives such as Inline Skating, Artists in Residence, new technology, books, art supplies, and sports equipment. Without this fundraising, we wouldn’t be able to provide these enriching opportunities for our students.
How can you help?
Volunteering for the Casino fundraiser is simple! You don’t need any special skills or prior experience – all training is provided by the casino staff on the day of your shift. Plus, you can sign up with a friend or family member, and you’ll receive a free meal during your shift. It's an easy and rewarding way to support our school community!
We need a minimum of 36 volunteers, plus 6 backups. To choose your shift and role, please visit the following link to sign up:
