Terry Fox School Run – Sept. 26
Our school will be taking part in the Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 26, as we join schools across Canada in celebrating the 45th anniversary of Terry’s Marathon of Hope. Students will hear from a guest speaker, join a fun pep rally, and then head outside to run or walk together in support of cancer research. We’re aiming to raise $2100, and students are encouraged to bring a Toonie for Terry or donate online at https://schools.terryfox.ca/98216. Parents are welcome to join us for the run — we’d love to see you there!
Treaty 7 Day and the Autumn Equinox – Sept. 22
This week, we take time as a school community to recognize Treaty 7 Day (September 22) and the Autumn Equinox (September 22). Treaty 7 was signed in 1877 between the Canadian government and several First Nations in southern Alberta, including the Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, Stoney-Nakoda, and Tsuut’ina Nations. Acknowledging Treaty 7 helps us reflect on the history of the land we live and learn on, and deepens our understanding of the relationships that continue to shape our community today.
The fall equinox marks the beginning of autumn, when day and night are nearly the same length. This natural shift is often seen as a time for balance, reflection, and gratitude. Many of our classes are exploring these themes through conversations, stories, and land-based learning, helping students connect with the season and the land in meaningful ways.
Orange Shirt Day at CHS
Today, September 19, our school community wore orange shirts as part of our continued commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. Although the official Orange Shirt Day is on September 30, which is now a national holiday in Canada known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we chose to observe and engage in learning activities ahead of time while students are still in school. This national day gives all Canadians a chance to reflect on the history and legacy of residential schools, and to honour the children, survivors, families, and communities affected by them.
Orange Shirt Day began with the story of Phyllis Webstad, who had her orange shirt taken away on her first day at residential school. Her story has become a symbol of how Indigenous children were stripped of their identity, language, and culture. At CHS, students across all grades are exploring this history in ways that are meaningful and age-appropriate. Many classes participated in land-based learning activities, worked on creating classroom land acknowledgments, or engaged in classroom conversations and activities linked to our Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.

Fun Lunches Are Back at CHS!
Fun Lunches are back at Capitol Hill School for the 2024–2025 school year! Organized by our amazing School Council, these special lunch days are a great way to give students something to look forward to - and give families a little break from packing lunch once in a while. Starting now, families can log in to Healthy Hunger and place orders for upcoming Fun Lunch dates.
Fun Lunches are scheduled for every second Thursday (usually), and they also serve as a small fundraiser for our school. The ordering process is quick and convenient, and it gives you the flexibility to choose the meals and dates that work best for your family. Please note that each Fun Lunch has an order deadline, typically five days before the lunch date. Unfortunately, no late orders can be accepted due to vendor commitments - so mark your calendars!
If you’re new to Healthy Hunger, here’s how to get started:
· Go to www.healthyhunger.ca
· Click “Register” (top right corner) to create a free parent account.
· Add your child(ren) and select Capitol Hill School (Calgary).
· View the list of upcoming Fun Lunches and place your order.
· Pay online via credit card. You’ll receive a confirmation and reminder before lunch day!
