Capitol Hill Connection – Feb. 28

Parent Teacher Conferences

Our Parent Teacher conferences are coming up on March 20 and 21 and we are excited to have students lead the interviews to share their learning, progress and next steps.  With the current strike situation, it is unlikely that the conferences will be in-person.  We will most likely be conducting the conferences online.  Please keep checking our Capitol Hill Connections for further updates.  Either way, sign up for conferences will open on March 14th @ 10:00 AM through MyCBE

Ramadan

Ramadan Mubarak to all our Muslim Capitol Hill Family members.   Ramadan is a month-long celebration where many practice fasting from morning until dusk.  Any of our fasting students will have access to the library during lunch hour if they so choose.  If you need to connect about your child fasting or needing other accommodations, please contact the school.

 Socks!

Grade 6 students will be making sock puppets as part of our puppetry residency.  If you have any clean, spare socks you can donate please send them Mr. K’s way on Monday.

Student Survey Grade 5 & 6

Capitol Hill School will be participating in an online school perception survey for students called the CBE Student Survey. Students in grades 5 & 6, between March 3rd and 14th, will complete the surveys in class.

About the CBE Student Survey

  • Allows students to voice their feedback on their experiences at school, the school environment and school improvement programs.
  • Based on their feedback, students have the opportunity to be involved in action plans fostering increased student engagement.
  • The survey should take about 60 to 80 minutes to complete.

The CBE Student Survey is an opportunity for students to:

  • report on themselves, their own abilities, and their accomplishments; and
  • take pride in what they have achieved.

In alignment with CBE’s Education Plan, the results are used in school and district reports to demonstrate that students are:

  • at the centre of all CBE decisions;
  • able to integrate and apply the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies they are acquiring across all academic disciplines; and
  • demonstrating Citizenship, Personal Development and Character in and through learning.

If you have questions or would like to request more information about the upcoming implementation of the CBE Student Survey, please contact the school.

Alberta Assurance Survey

As part of our ongoing commitment to providing a world-class education for Alberta’s children, Alberta Education will again be conducting our annual survey of grade 4 students and teachers.  Parents should have received access codes as well.  If you have no, please contact the school.  The survey will gather important information about students’ and parents’ school experiences and will help to inform continuous improvement in our education system. The survey will also be sent to all teachers in the province. In some schools, all students in grades 4 and above – and their parents or guardians – will be surveyed.

This year’s survey will take place from February to March 2025, and we strongly encourage all eligible parents or guardians to participate and share your feedback on your child’s or children’s education.  Survey participants will be asked questions on a variety of topics, including: welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environments; student learning engagement; and, parental involvement in their children’s education. Survey participants are not required to provide their names or personal details, and all survey responses are confidential.

If you haven’t already received your email please let Mr. K know. (bakwiatkowski@cbe.ab.ca)

Additional details about Alberta Education’s quality assurance measures and framework for
monitoring performance in the education system are available at www.alberta.ca/alberta-education-assurance-survey
Please contact your school principal if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s participation in the survey.

Fun Lunch March 6

Our next Fun Lunch is on March 6, and we need your help to make it a success! Volunteers are essential for sorting and distributing pre-ordered lunches, ensuring every student receives their meal on time. If you can spare a short amount of time, we’d love your support—arrive at 10:45 AM to verify orders and help distribute lunches to classrooms by 11:20 AM. This is a great way to meet other parents, get involved in the school community, and make a meaningful contribution. Even if you can only help once, your time and effort are greatly appreciated! Sugar Shack

On the afternoon of March 10, in conjunction with Branton School, Capitol Hill will host the sugar shack in the afternoon.  The event staff will set up tables with snow, upon which they will pour hot maple syrup for students to roll tire d’érable (maple taffies on a popsicle stick).  There is also usually (weather dependent) an interpreter, music, opportunities for photos, and activities such as a sack race, a 3-person plank race, and a tug of war. Feel free to join us in the Capitol Hill school field.
