PD Day & Long Weekend Reminder

A reminder that there will be no school tomorrow, Friday, May 15, as it is a non-instructional day. There will also be no school on Monday, May 18, for the Victoria Day holiday.

Classes will resume on Tuesday, May 19. We hope everyone enjoys the long weekend and some extra time with family and friends!

Water Bottles & Hats for Sunny Days

With the warmer and sunnier weather arriving, we are asking families to please make sure students come to school each day with a filled water bottle. Students may also keep a water bottle at school, but if they do, we ask that it be taken home regularly, ideally at the end of each week, to be washed.

It is also a good idea for students to bring a hat to wear outside during recess, Physical Education, and other outdoor learning times. Thanks for helping students stay comfortable, hydrated, and ready to enjoy their time outdoors.

Last Call: Volunteer Appreciation Tea RSVPs

A final reminder that the last day to RSVP for our Volunteer Appreciation Tea is Friday, May 15 so we can plan and prepare appropriately. The tea will take place on Friday, May 22 at 10:00 AM in the school gymnasium, and we are looking forward to celebrating the many volunteers who have supported Capitol Hill School this year.

If you volunteered in any way this year, including field trips, Fun Lunch, classroom support, School Council events, Geodome watering, gardening, or other school activities, we would love to have you join us. RSVP for the Capitol Hill School Volunteer Appreciation Tea – Fill out form

OurSCHOOL Student Survey | Grades 4–6

Over the next two weeks, students in Grades 4–6 will be participating in the OurSCHOOL Student Survey. This anonymous, voluntary survey gives students an opportunity to share their voice and perspectives about their experiences at school, including areas such as belonging, safety, relationships, engagement, and well-being.

As we near the end of the school year, this survey provides an important year-end snapshot of how students are experiencing life at Capitol Hill School. The feedback helps us better understand what is working well and where we can continue to grow. We will use this information, alongside classroom observations, achievement data, and family feedback, to help guide our planning and priorities moving forward.

Final School Council & CHEES Meeting – May 20

Our final School Council and CHEES meeting of the year will take place on Wednesday, May 20 at 6:30 PM. We’ll be discussing school structure and organization for next year, as well as upcoming community events, including Food Trucks & Families, coming up in June. We’ll also be talking about available positions on the Council Executive team, including Treasurer and Key Communicator, along with this fall’s casino fundraiser dates. Capitol Hill School’s casino dates have now been confirmed for October 29 and 30, 2026.

Even though this is the last meeting of the school year, new faces are always welcome! If you’re curious about what’s going on, want to learn more, or are thinking about getting involved, please come out on May 20. We hope to see you there.

Approved Volunteers Needed for Grade 1 Field Experience

Our Grade 1 classes are excited to participate in the Open Minds Program at City Hall School, a week-long field trip experience focused on hands-on learning and exploring our community. At this point, we do not yet have enough volunteers from our Grade 1 families to fully support the program, so we are reaching out to our wider CHS community for help.

If you are a parent, guardian, or approved volunteer from any grade level and you have current CBE volunteer clearance, we would be grateful for your support. Volunteers would help supervise and support students from 8:40 AM–3:10 PM Monday to Thursday, and until 12:30 PM on Friday. Even helping for a single day would make a big difference.

  • Mr. Evan’s class: May 25–29
  • Mrs. Gosse’s class: June 1–5

If you are able to help, please email the teacher directly with your availability:

Thank you for helping make this meaningful learning experience possible for our students.

Grade 6 Provincial Achievement Tests

Grade 6 students will soon begin writing Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs). These assessments are developed by Alberta Education and are used as large-scale assessment tools to gather information about student achievement across the province. PATs provide one snapshot of learning in specific subject areas at a particular point in time.

It is important for families to know that PAT results do not determine report card grades or school-based achievement reporting. Student achievement on report cards is based on classroom learning, ongoing assessment, teacher observations, assignments, projects, and demonstrations of learning over time.

Families of Grade 6 students are encouraged to note the following PAT dates:

  • English Language Arts and Literature Part A: Monday, May 25
  • English Language Arts and Literature Part B: Thursday, June 4
  • Science: Friday, June 12
  • Mathematics Part A: Monday, June 15
  • Mathematics Part B: Thursday, June 18

Please help your child be prepared by ensuring they arrive at school on time and ready to participate.

Apply Now for Yellow School Bus Service

Families can now apply for yellow school bus service for the 2026–27 school year through their MyCBE account. To have students added to bus routes for the start of the next school year, families must apply by Sunday, June 14, 2026.

Registrations will continue to be accepted after the deadline, but students will be added only to the closest existing bus stop with available space, and processing times will be delayed. In some cases, students registered after June 14 may not be able to ride the bus until mid-October. Confirmed routes will be posted in MyCBE in August.

For first-time bus riders, CBE is also offering My 1st Ride orientation sessions on May 23 and 24. These free sessions include a short presentation, a brief school bus ride, and a drama presentation. Families must register in advance to attend.
