Important Information for Parents: When to Keep Your Child at Home

To keep our school community healthy, we ask that parents follow these guidelines to determine when to keep their children at home due to illness and when they can safely return to school.

    • Keep your child at home if they have symptoms such as:

      • Shortness of breath
      • Sore throat
      • Runny nose or nasal congestion
      • Fever
      • Fatigue or muscle aches
      • Loss of taste or smell
    • Return to school when:
      • Symptoms have improved
      • They feel well enough to resume normal activities
      • They have been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications
  2. Gastrointestinal Illness (e.g., Vomiting, Diarrhea)
    • Keep your child at home if they have vomiting or diarrhea.
    • Return to school when:
      • They have been symptom-free for at least 48 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhea.

    • Return to school when:
      • Follow your doctor’s or healthcare provider’s recommendations or the school health team’s guidance.

What Happens if Your Child Becomes Ill at School?

If your child shows signs of illness during school hours:

  • They will be kept away from others, and you will be contacted to pick them up as soon as possible.
  • Staff will take all necessary precautions to care for your child safely while they wait to be picked up.

Capitol Hill School follows the guidelines of Alberta Health Services, Communicable Disease Control, in all matters related to outbreak prevention and control.

Attendance Line: 403-777-6160   ext.1

In the event of student absence, the parent/guardian is asked to call the school Attendance Line and leave a message.

Medical Conditions

Please inform the school if your child has any medical condition and/or requires medications while at school. If a child needs any prescriptions dispensed at school there must be a doctor’s signed Student Health Plan form on file at the school. You can pick up this form at the school office or on the CBE Forms You Need page.

Allergy Safe School

It is critical that parents, students and guardians are aware that some children at Capitol Hill School have severe allergies, not only to nuts but to other things such as grains, insects, etc. We ask for your support to ensure that you do not send your child(ren) to school with any food items containing nuts or nut products in their lunches and snacks, or in products for classroom parties or bake sales.

It is imperative for students who have a severe allergy to carry their epi-pen in a fanny pack on them at all times

Parents must complete medical forms yearly (the forms have been updated). They are available at the office. Please ensure that the office and the homeroom teacher have also been notified about your child’s allergies.

Lice

There may be times during the school year when we have cases of head lice.

If your child has head lice, please contact the school and let us know. If your child has been exposed to lice at school we will notify you.

As a precaution, we ask all parents to check their child’s head frequently for a few weeks after any exposure. You can find more information on lice from myhealth.alberta.ca.
