One of the most important ways parents/guardians and community members can make a meaningful difference for students is by participating on the school council. Under the Education Act, a school council is a collective association designed to advise the principal and the CBE Board of Trustees on matters related to the school. School councils have legislated advisory and decision-making authority defined within the Education Act and the School Councils Regulation. They are different from Parent Societies & Associations, whose main function is to raise funds for the school. You can find more details in the CBE School Council Handbook.

About Our School Council
The School Council at Capitol Hill School plays a significant role in fostering a collaborative environment that enhances the educational experience of all students. Meetings are held monthly, typically on the third or fourth Wednesday at 6:30 PM, with no meetings scheduled in December, March, or June. These gatherings provide an essential forum for parents, teachers, and school staff to discuss current and upcoming activities, both at the school and within the Calgary Board of Education system. The specific meeting dates can be confirmed by checking theschool calendar.
At the core of the Capitol Hill School Council’s work is its commitment to open communication and collective decision-making. Through this council, parents are invited to actively participate in shaping the school’s direction and provide input on significant matters, such as the school’s budget and development plans. The council serves as an advisory body, ensuring that the voices of the parent community are heard and considered in the decision-making processes that affect the students.
One of the school’s strengths is the high level of parent engagement. Parents are deeply involved in various school activities, including participation in specialized groups, such as the environmental parent group, which focuses on improving outdoor learning spaces. This initiative has made a meaningful impact, enhancing both the educational environment and the overall well-being of students. The support and collaboration between parents and staff are highly valued at Capitol Hill School, and their contributions play a crucial role in creating a vibrant and nurturing learning environment.
The School Council’s mission extends beyond just advising on school-related matters. It seeks to create a sense of community and partnership between families, staff, and the broader school system. By working together, Capitol Hill School Council continues to support the school's efforts to provide students with the best possible educational experience. Parents are always encouraged to attend meetings, engage in discussions, and contribute to the ongoing success of the school.
This welcoming and inclusive approach is at the heart of what makes the Capitol Hill School Council a vital part of the school’s fabric. The dedication of the parent community, combined with the efforts of the school staff, ensures that Capitol Hill remains a place where students can thrive academically, socially, and personally.
