Thank You for Joining Us!

Thank you to all of the families who joined us on Wednesday evening for Meet the Teacher and our first School Council & CHEES meeting of the year. It was wonderful to have so many families back in the building, connecting with teachers, learning more about the year ahead, and taking part in conversations about our school community.

A special thank you to our teachers and staff for preparing and sharing their grade-team presentations, and to our School Council and CHEES volunteers for welcoming families, sharing information, and getting another year of parent involvement underway. We appreciate everyone who took time out of a busy evening to join us and help start the year with such a strong sense of community.

Non-Instructional Day: Friday, September 25

Our first non-instructional day of the school year is Friday, September 25. There will be no classes for students, so please ensure your child does not come to school that day. Teachers will be developing Individualized Program Plans (IPPs) for students requiring them, as well as working with Jenn Doeve from Yellow Steps to prepare for our upcoming school-wide residency in October.

Healthy Hunger Fun Lunches

Our Healthy Hunger Fun Lunch program is underway for 2026–27, with our first lunch coming up on Thursday, September 24, featuring Subway. Families who would like to participate must place and pay for their order through Healthy Hunger by Saturday, September 19 at 11:59 PM. Unfortunately, late orders cannot be accommodated.

Fun Lunches are organized by School Council & CHEES and provide students with an optional special lunch while also helping raise funds that support opportunities for students at Capitol Hill. Additional lunch dates and vendors will continue to be added throughout the year, and families can order ahead once dates appear in their Healthy Hunger account. Families can visit Healthy Hunger to register or place an order.

Truth and Reconciliation Week and Orange Shirt Day

From September 21–25, Capitol Hill students will participate in age-appropriate learning for Truth and Reconciliation Week. Through stories, classroom activities, and conversations, students will learn about the history and continuing impacts of residential schools while honouring Survivors, their families, and the strength, cultures, and resilience of Indigenous Peoples.

Capitol Hill School will recognize Orange Shirt Day on Tuesday, September 29. Students and staff are encouraged to wear orange as a reminder that every child matters. There will be no school on Wednesday, September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Families may wish to continue their learning by participating in one of the community events taking place across Calgary.

Casino Fundraiser – Volunteers Needed!

Volunteer sign-up is now open for CHEES’s Casino Fundraiser on October 28 & 29 at ACE Casino Airport. This is our school community’s largest fundraising opportunity, and our last casino raised an incredible $82,956.03. Casino funds help support student experiences and resources such as artist residencies, inline skating, field-trip transportation, books, technology, and sports and art equipment.

The casino depends on volunteers to fill the required positions over both days. No previous casino experience is required, training and instructions are provided, and there are daytime, evening, and late-night shifts available. If you can give a few hours of your time, please consider supporting this important fundraiser. Sign up for a Casino volunteer shift here!

Help Us Get to Know Your Child

As we settle into the school year, our teachers would appreciate the opportunity to learn more about each child from the people who know them best. Our short Parent/Guardian Perspective Sharing Form provides families with an opportunity to share information about their child’s strengths, interests, learning needs, well-being, and any other context that may help their teacher better understand and support them this year.

Please share only what you are comfortable providing. Most questions are optional, and the form should take approximately 5–10 minutes to complete. Families with more than one child at Capitol Hill School are asked to submit a separate form for each child.

Art Cards by Kids

Art Cards by Kids is returning to Capitol Hill this fall! Students will create their own artwork at school, which families will later have the opportunity to turn into professionally printed cards and other keepsakes. It is always fun to see students’ original artwork transformed into something families can share with relatives and friends or keep for themselves.

Once student artwork has been prepared, families will receive ordering information and instructions for viewing and purchasing their child’s creations online. Orders are delivered back to the school for distribution. More information, including this year’s ordering deadline, will be shared once the artwork and ordering process are ready.

Papa John’s Student Discount

Capitol Hill families can save 20% on regular menu-priced orders from Papa John’s using the discount code STUDENT20. The code can be used an unlimited number of times for online orders placed through papajohns.ca or the Papa John’s app until June 30, 2027.
